A Candidate Guide to the UK Right to Work Process in Referoo (Hooyu/Mitek)
Referoo integrates with Hooyu/Mitek, a government-approved Digital Right to work provider to verify a person's identity
The check is carried out by Hooyu/Mitek, one of the UK's first government accredited providers of digital identity solutions.
Preparing to Start the Check
You may be required to provide certain documentation to complete your check with Hooyu/Mitek. If possible, have the documents on hand, such as your:
- Passport
- Drivers licence
- UK Government Share Code
Completing the Check
To complete the check:
- Follow the link provided to you via SMS or email to your Candidate Dashboard
- On the My Details page, you will be asked to confirm in your details are correct.
Please ensure that your details are all spelt EXACTLY as they are on your passport/ID.
- First Name
- Last Name
- Address
- Town
- County
- Postcode
You may be given an option to indicate whether you have a UK or Irish Passport, or simply to select your Nationality. Make the appropriate selection then provide your UK Government Sharecode if it is requested:
- If you have a UK or Irish passport tick the box; otherwise
- If you have a UK Government Share Code, please enter it now. If you are using a Share Code, please refer here:
- Click Confirm Your Details
You will then be taken to a Referoo page in Hooyu/Mitek, where you'll be given the option to choose which Cookies to accept. Make your selection to continue on.
Next you'll be asked to accept Hooyu's privacy policy. You must agree and continue in order to complete this Right to Work check. If you don't, you'll need to enter in a reason for declining, and you won't be able to complete this Right to Work check unless you reach back out to your HR manager or recruiter and ask for a new invite.
Providing the selfie and documents
You will be prompted to complete several checks:
- Liveness check; this confirms you are the person doing the check
- Likeness check; this confirms that the likeness matches the ID provided
- ID screen; this confirms that the ID provided is valid and matches what is on record
The liveness check will use your camera on your computer/phone and take about 10 seconds to upload.
To complete this process, please make sure:
- permissions are enabled to access the camera.
- no other applications are using the camera at this time, as they may prevent them from being accessed.
The ID Screen will require you to upload a photo of your ID Document(s). This will take about 1 minute to upload, scan and approve.
When taking the photo, ensure that you capture all 4 corners of the document. The text and image on the ID must be sharp and clear, with nothing obscuring the document (e.g. fingers or shadow). Make sure that the information you have on your passport matched on the details you provided earlier.
If you are providing a passport, it will need to be a currently valid UK passport.
Once completed, you will be taken back to Referoo, and the process is complete. You may then continue entering your nominated references as required, or close the page if complete.
Manual Identity Verification
On the Identity Verification page, you may see a section labelled ‘Can’t verify digitally?’
This section is for UK Nationals with a birth certificate issued 12 months after birth from the UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands.
- Select ‘Verify Manually’.
- A confirmation pop-up appears - the HR Manager/Recruiter is notified to complete a manual ID review.
- You can return to digital verification if selected in error.
- Once your HR Manager/Recruiter completes your Manual Identity Verification, you may return to your dashboard and proceed with the DBS or Disclosure Scotland check.

Common Issues With Checks
During the process of uploading documents, you may get some errors or issues. To help prevent these, please ensure:
- You are using the original documents, as Hooyu/Mitek will work to detect copies
- Your documents have enough lighting, as Hooyu/Mitek may not be able to accurately determine details to be checked
- If your documents are failing try an alternative image or taking a new image, as the does detect if the same file has been uploaded
- Make sure the details you have confirmed in Referoo match you documents.
Following the above will assist in reducing the number of issues experienced during the right to work check process.
