Identity Requirements for Australian Police Checks

Verifying your identity requirements for Australian Police Checks

In order to verify your identity, it is necessary to provide a Selfie Photo along with four distinct types of identification documents:

  1. One document that indicates your date of birth or your arrival date in Australia, referred to as a Commencement Document.
  2. One document that establishes your identity, known as a Primary Document.
  3. One additional document that supports your identity, termed a Secondary Document.

Ensure that all documents display your full legal name and date of birth.

At least one of the documents must include a photograph of you, such as a passport or driver's license.

Selfie photo

As part of the procedure, it is crucial to take a clear close-up picture of your face, facing the camera directly, making sure that nothing blocks your face.

Your picture must be taken in a session, and social media or group photographs are not allowed. Please avoid taking photocopies or photographing your document. Instead, just capture a simple, clear picture of your face.

This is necessary to confirm that the photo matches the document and accurately depicts you.

Commencement Documents

A commencement document acts as a means of identification that verifies your identity and date of birth. It is essential to provide at least one commencement document during the identity verification process. The following documents are recognized as commencement documents:

  • Australian Birth Certificate
  • Australian Passport
  • Australian Citizenship Certificate
  • VEVO lookup – An electronic verification of your visa entitlements and status, which may be utilized as a commencement document (overseas passport must also be provided)
  • ImmiCard
  • Document of Identity issued by DFAT
  • Certificate of Identity issued by DFAT
  • Evidence of Residence status

If you are from another country (foreign candidates), your overseas passport may be utilized as a primary document, and NCC will verify your visa status as your commencement document.

Primary Documents

A primary document (or source) is an original, first-hand, or direct record of an event, person, or time period, created by witnesses or participants at the time of the event. It provides raw evidence or first-hand testimony, such as legal documents.

The following documents are required:

  • Australian Driver's Licence
  • Current Overseas Passport
  • Proof of Age or Photo ID – issued by the Australian Government, must be current, and display your name, date of birth, and signature

If you are under 18 years old who do not have any of the previously mentioned primary documents can also provide a Student Photo ID Card.

Secondary Documents

A secondary ID is used along with a main photo ID to verify someone's identity in Australia. Common examples include a Medicare card, utility bill, bank card/statement, student ID, or birth certificate. These documents help show proof of address and identity.

One or two of these documents are required:

  • Medicare Card
  • Bank Card
  • Credit Card or Debit Card – our system will automatically mask your card number so that it's not visible on the Bank Card
  • Enrolment with the Australian Electoral Commission
  • Secondary Student Photo ID – must be issued from an Australian educational institution
  • Tertiary Student Photo ID – must be issued from an Australian educational institution
  • Document of Identity issued by DFAT
  • Foreign Government Issued Documents – such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, driver’s licence or identity card. If the document is in a foreign language, then an official NAATI certified english translation must also be uploaded with it. If already uploaded as ID in another section of the application, it cannot be used again.
  • (Australian) Government Issued Occupational License photo ID
  • Security Guard / Crowd Control Licence
  • High Risk License Photo ID card (Government issued)
  • NDIS worker screening Photo ID card (Government issued)
  • Evidence of Right to an Australian Government Benefit
  • Australian government issued Seniors card including DVA.
  • ATO Issued Tax Document – such as a Notice of Assessment or Confirmation letter of TFN. These documents must be from the Australian Tax Office and include applicants name and address
  • Consular Photo Identity Card
  • Police Officer Photo Identity Card
  • Australian Defence Force Photo ID Card
  • Australian Government Photo ID Card
  • Trusted Referees Report
  • Aviation Security Identification Card
  • Maritime Security Identification Card
  • Credit Reference Check
  • Certified Academic Transcript from an Australian University
  • Convention Travel Document Secondary
  • Certificate of Identity issued by DFAT

The documents must show your name and relevant information. For example, some cards may have the names printed on the back, and if this is the case, the photo should illustrate the rear side of the card.

Various bank cards (credit cards, debit cards, etc.) are accepted from Australian Financial Institutions only in line with ACIC regulations; however, each card must be issued by a distinct bank or financial institution and must not be expired. All card numbers are automatically concealed for security reasons.

Change of Name

If documents are provided that feature different names, for example, a Birth Certificate in a maiden or former name and a Drivers Licence in the current name, then an additional document explaining the reason for the name change must also be provided.

Supporting documents consist of Marriage Certificates or Change of Name certificates. These documents are required to be government-issued by the appropriate Births, Deaths, and Marriages agency, either in Australia or abroad.
